ELP- Intro
Written on January 1, 2010
Overview
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer were one of the first super-groups. Keith Emerson came from The Nice, Greg Lake came from King Crimson, and Carl Palmer came from Atomic Rooster. They are also one of the original progressive rock acts along with King Crimson, Yes, and Genesis. In the early and mid 70′s, they were immensely successful. To date, they have sold over 40 million albums worldwide, and “by the end of 1974, ELP were just about tied with Led Zeppelin as the highest grossing live band in the world” (Wikipedia).

Post Script:
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer has always gone by the acronym “ELP,” but what many people don’t know is they were almost going to be “HELP,” and guess who the “H” was… Hendrix! Hendrix liked what they were doing, and he was ready for a change, so an audition was set up with the prospect of Jimi taking over guitar and some vocal duties, but he died 26 days before the scheduled audition. Unfortunately, we never got to see “HELP,” but if we had, I can only imagine the potential.

If you want to understand why some listeners and critics rave about this album and “merging of classical and rock music” you must go back in time to The Nice band where Keith Emerson and the other band members covered and “made overwrites” many classical pieces.
For example this EL&P album contains Béla Bartók’s “Allegro barbaro” piano piece as “The Barbarian” track.
These listeners hear these previously works of Emerson.
